Community garden

Our community garden is a welcoming space where people come together to grow and share food, boost nature, learn new skills and build lasting connections!

Founded in 2022 in the grounds of the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, this is where our journey began and it’s at the heart of everything we do.

A garden for everyone

Rooted Chippenham community garden

Across the site of our community garden you’ll find allotment-style beds, an accessible 40ft polytunnel and raised beds, a brassica tunnel, rainwater harvesting, compost bays, a wildlife pond, bug hotels and even our own Community Tree Nursery - all working together to support people and nature!

We grow over 30 varieties of fruit and vegetables throughout the year, with over 40 local residents getting involved - from young families with babes-in-arms to the experienced and retired. Everything we grow is shared equally, and we practice sustainable, organic gardening methods to care for the soil and boost biodiversity.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just curious to give it a try, you’ll find friendly faces, fresh air and a real sense of belonging here!

Our garden has been made possible thanks to the amazing support of Wiltshire Council and the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre, plus essential grants from Chippenham Town Council and Wessex Water to help create our infrastructure.

An accessible space

We take great care to provide an accessible, family friendly, safe space that can be enjoyed by everyone, including:

  • Wheelchair accessible raised growing beds on a patio, including bench seating

  • A polytunnel accessible via hard ground with a laid path down the middle

  • A main growing area laid with woodchip paths

  • A wildlife pond protected with secure netting

  • Toilets and wheelchair accessible facilities located in the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre (usually open for our monthly meet-ups, but we can't guarantee this)

Please note that we are not trained medical or mental healthcare professionals. Please bring a support worker, friend or family member the first time you visit if you think you may need extra support to access the garden.

Come along and get involved!

Our monthly meet-ups are relaxed, friendly and informal, with a range of garden activities to try. And of course, we make time to share a cup of tea and some delicious food together!

There are no fees, no ongoing commitments and no previous experience necessary. We welcome everyone - from young families and gardening novices to the retired and green fingered.

Once you’ve come along to a meet-up and introduced yourself, you’re welcome to enjoy the garden whenever it suits you. Drop in to help with watering or weeding, harvest a little produce, care for our trees, or simply sit and unwind among the bees and butterflies!

Where and when

Our regular garden meet ups are held on the first Saturday of every month, between 10am and 1pm at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Cocklebury Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 3QN.

Some of our volunteers also arrange weekly and ad-hoc sessions via our Whatsapp group that you can join once you’ve attended a session.

There is no need to get in touch with us before you join a monthly session - please just turn up! If you do have any questions, please get in touch using the contact form below.
